Dr. Pia Crandell is from Sherborn, MA. She attended Kalamazoo College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She was recognized in Who’s Who of American College Students and was a collegiate athlete making the all-star Michigan first team. She earned a Masters of Arts in Guidance and Counseling with a Student Personnel emphasis from Eastern Michigan University and then later earned a Doctorate of Applied Psychology (Organizational) from George Mason University. Her dissertation was on factors influencing hiring decisions.
Dr. Crandell served in a wide variety of leadership positions in educational and not-for-profit organizations. As Assistant Dean of Students at Denison University, she supervised residence hall staff, counseled students and trained student leaders. She has also served as the Director of a Youth Center, managing staff, conducting trainings, developing budgets and working with a board of directors. Then as a Volunteer Coordinator for the American Red Cross Blood Services division of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter, she was responsible for recruiting, assigning, and training all volunteers in Chicago for blood drives. After completing her doctorate, she became the Executive Director of NW Works, serving the employment needs of individuals with disabilities. She developed a strong board of directors, which created a visionary strategic plan that was used for over ten years. Safety and financial procedures were developed to make the organization run much more efficiently and securely.
Dr. Crandell became the Director of Admissions in 2001 and then the Director of Enrollment Management at Randolph-Macon Academy. She instituted a more stringent screening process, improving the quality of the student body, helped the organization define itself and its niche, then developed clear branding messages that were used on the web, publications, and verbally throughout the organization. A systematic follow-up procedure was developed in both the recruitment and retention of students. She also led the philosophy and mission committee for the school’s 10-year VAIS/SACS accreditation visit, served on several search committees for senior staff replacements and investigative review committees and led Board strategic planning retreats.
In 2011, she retired and is now joining Hobgood and Associates, LLC to provide educational services to private schools and boards. She is committed to assisting organizations create excellence, to develop an inspirational vision that aligns the organization, and to clarify strengths and unique differences so the brand is succinct and unique.
Dr. Crandell is married to Dr. John Crandell, a clinical psychologist in Winchester, VA, where they reside. They have two grown children.
